Chapter Fifteen:
Incognito:
“Clearly, the
situation has become a mess,” Doyle said. “Who did you piss off?” Lauren shook
her head.
“I don’t know,”
she said. The vampire looked down at her hands. “You don’t think it’s because of
what happened to me?”
“It’s possible,”
he said. Lauren shook her head.
“But… That’s not
my fault!” she yelled. “I was kidnapped and turned into this!”
“That doesn’t
matter to them,” Doyle said. “You are a threat to them and you must die because
of it.” The female vampire gritted her teeth.
“That’s just
wrong!” she shouted.
“That’s how it
is,” Doyle said. “Are you going to cry about it?” The female vampire shook her
head.
“No,” she said.
“No?”
“I want to kill
the people who did this to me!”
Doyle smirked.
“Good, good. And how are you going to do that?”
Lauren blinked
at him. “Huh?”
“Do you even
know who did this to you?”
“There was a man
and a woman, but I can’t remember their faces. And there was a big white van.”
Lauren rubbed her forehead.
“Anything else?”
Doyle asked. The female vampire sat on the roof to think harder. She looked like
she was having a mental crash. The man rubbed his forehead.
“You’re just
about hopeless, aren’t you?” he asked.
“It’s wasn’t my
fault!” Lauren shouted. “They just jumped me and took me back to some weird
lab.” She looked down at her hand.
“Now, I’m hungry
all the time and can walk around in sunlight,” she said. “What am I supposed to
do now?” Lauren looked up to see Doyle smirking at her.
“What?” she
asked.
“You say all of
that like it’s a bad thing,” he said.
“Isn’t it,
though?”
“Is it?”
Lauren dropped
her fists by her sides. “I don’t know.” He took her by the shoulders. Her
instinct told her to run when she saw him smirk. In the beginning, she just
latched onto him out of hunger and survival. But now, something didn’t seem
right about him.
“Lauren, honey,”
he said. “You have the power to hunt both day and night.” Her eyes widened.
“I can?” she
asked.
“Yes!” Doyle
practically shouted in her face. “It annoys me that you haven’t tried to use
your new gifts to your advantage.”
“Gifts?
Advantage?” Lauren asked. “I’ve been too busy being hungry all of the damn
time!”
“Yes, yes,” he
said. “That’s understandable. You were just trying to get your footing
together.” Lauren raised her eyebrow.
“I don’t
understand you,” she said.
“Why is that?”
Doyle asked.
“Why are you
doing this for me?” the female vampire asked. “What do you get out of this? How
can I be sure that you won’t turn on me when I turn my back?”
“It’s like I
said before, I find you interesting,” he said. “Entertainment. And you don’t
know.” She stared at him with a strange look on her face. Doyle patted Lauren on
the back.
“We still have
work to do to get you up to speed to where you need to be,” he said. “Right now,
I can’t be of any use to you.”
“Why?” Lauren
asked with big eyes. Doyle pointed to the sky behind them. The female vampire
turned to see the dark sky slowly turning lighter.
“The sun’s about
to come up,” he said lowering his hat. “Unlike you, I can’t walk around in the
sunlight.”
“But what about
me?” Lauren asked.
“You’ll be fine
because you can walk around in the sunlight,” the male vampire said. He tilted
his head when he saw her looking at her like a sad little puppy.
“What’s that
look for?” he asked. Lauren felt her body trembling. Her companion sighed and
threw back his head.
“Fine, I’ll help
you out,” he said. Doyle touched her on the forehead. A quick light shot into
her head, causing Lauren to stumble backwards. She felt dizzy, but shook it off.
“What was that
for?” she asked.
“It’s list of
instructions,” he said. “It’ll guide you through the day. We’ll meet back at the
destination I told you about in your head.”
“But what are
you going to do?” the female vampire asked.
“What else?”
Doyle asked. “I’m going back to sleep. I have to. You understand.” He jumped
down through the hole in the roof. Lauren stared down, sneering.
“Gee thanks,” she muttered. She sighed and shook her head before she jumping up into the sky and disappearing.
