Chapter Eight:
On the Hunt:
Meanwhile, Linda
practically danced around the house.
“Come on,
honey!” she said. “We have to get going. Lauren could be anywhere. What if some
other scientist gets to her first?”
“I know, dear,”
Eric said. Linda came within inches of his face.
“So, why don’t
we get to it?” she asked. “I want to get our daughter home A. S. A. P.” Her
husband gave her a strange look.
“Daughter?” he
asked.
“Yes!” Linda
shouted. “We made her. So she is our baby. And now we have get her back.” Eric
did all but laugh nervously.
“Are you feeling
okay, honey?” he asked.
“Of course I
am!” she said. “I’ve never felt better in my life! We have to get going! Our
daughter needs to come home!”
“Okay, okay,”
Eric said reluctantly.
“Yay!” Linda
cheered. She ran down the hall, laughing. Her poor husband sat in living room,
wondering how far this obsession would go.
----------
“How will we
even find her?” Eric in the passenger seat.
“Simple,” Linda
said behind the wheel. “We just follow the trail of crimes that our dear Lauren
has committed.” Eric sighed. At least it’s
an easy way. The man looked out the window.
“Honey, aren’t
we going too fast?” he asked.
“No!” his wife
shouted. “We have to get there as soon as we can!”
“But we’re
speeding!”
“It’s fine! We
have to hurry!” Just as her husband predicted, they got pulled over an hour
later. A cop spotted their van whizzing by. His siren was enough to stop the
cop. Linda pouted as she rolled down her window.
“What is it?”
she groaned.
“Do you know how
fast you were going, ma’am?” the cop asked. Linda pressed her hand to her
forehead.
“I don’t care!”
she wailed. “We’re in a hurry!”
“That’s no
excuse to be speeding,” he said.
“Whatever, can
we go?”
“No, ma’am I
have to write you a ticket.”
“We don’t have
time! We’re looking for our test subject daughter!” Beside her, Eric groaned and
slammed his hand against his forehead.
“Oh boy,” he
mumbled.
“What?” the cop
asked.
“Look, we have
to go,” Linda said. She put the car into drive mode.
“Ma’am, you
can’t do that!” the officer shouted. The female scientist took off speeding down
the highway. Eric grabbed onto the bar above.
“Babe, you
shouldn’t have done that!” he yelled.
“We didn’t have
time!” Linda shouted back. “We needed to get Lauren back! That cop was slowing
us down!”
“But where are
headed?”
“To the first
crime scene of course!” Linda burst into laughter as she kept driving. Her
husband screamed as they went faster. The whole time the cop chased after them
in his car.
“Ma’am, pull
over the van!” he shouted over his megaphone. “This is your last warning!” Eric
looked behind them with an uneasy look on his face.
“Honey, we have
to do what the cop says,” he said.
“We don’t have
time!” Linda cried. “The longer we stall the further away our daughter gets from
us!”
“She is not our
daughter!”
“She’s is our
baby! Our test subject!” Linda sped further down the highway. Eric panted as
grabbed onto the bar above for dear life.
“Can we at least
do the speed limit?!” he asked.
“No!” his wife shouted. “We have to hurry!” It would take a squad of cops to slow them down on the first day.
