Chapter Nine: Breakfast with Ladies:
Louise unlocked her front door. She listened for any plotting or escape attempts. She knew her mother to try and turn anyone against her own daughter for her own entertainment. That’s how her mother was. By now, she could be plotting a way to get Noiz back to Japan behind her back.
Louise frowned. That’s not going to happen. Not if she had something to say about it. Then, she heard the TV in the distant background. Louise narrowed her eyes.
Found them, she thought. The woman wondered into the dining room. Noiz and Pelagie sat at the table having breakfast. The news played in the background on the black and white TV. Noiz drank her milk as she listened to the older woman talk on. Louise stood with her feet together as she cleared her throat. Her boss glanced up at her over her glass. Her mother stopped talking and looked up.
“Oh good morning, Lou!” she said. “So glad you could join us. Come, take a seat.” Her daughter sneered at her.
“Sorry, already ate,” she said.
“Well, sit with us anyway,” Pelagie said. “We missed you this morning, didn’t we Noiz?” The kitty froze as she put up her hands.
“I’m not in this!” she yelped. Louise turned her glance at her.
“Good answer,” her eyes said. Pelagie gave her a little shrug.
“Humor us here, okay?” she said. Her daughter’s frown deepened.
“And why should I?” she asked.
“Cause I miss my baby girl!” her mother said. Louise narrowed her eyes at her. You lie, she thought. She thought to voice this thought as well. But instead, the woman put a fake smile.
“Fine,” she said. “Fine, fine.” Louise walked over to the table and sat down. Pelagie smiled at her daughter.
“Very good,” she said. Louise stuck up her middle finger under the table.
“So,” Pelagie said. “What have you been up to this morning?” Louise snorted.
“Unlike you,” she said. “I got up and went out to see my agent!” Pelagie took a drink of her coffee.
“Uh-huh,” she muttered. Louise looked intently at her.
“What was that for?” she asked.
“Nothing,” her mother lied as she looked away. “It’s just…”
“What?” her daughter asked.
Pelagie finished her coffee and lit up her cigarette. Noiz glanced over at her.
“Could you please not do that?” she asked. Pelagie glanced over at her with the lit cig between her fat fingers.
“Why?” she asked.
“I don’t enjoy smokers while I eat,” the kitty reasoned. The older woman frowned at her.
“Why is that?” she asked. Noiz put down her empty glass.
“It’s just not sightly,” she said.
“Not sightly?” Pelagie asked. “She says it’s not sightly!”
“Could you please put it out?” Noiz asked again.
“Put it out,” Louise said. Pelagie stared at her daughter.
“And why should I do that?” she asked.
“Because she asked you to!” Lou shouted. “You could at least show some courtesy!” Pelagie choked back a laugh.
“That’s funny, coming from you!” she said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Louise asked in a sharp tone.
“You know what I mean!” her mother said. Smoke slowly dragged into the air close to her English muffin.
“You always weren’t a lady growing up,” she said. Noiz felt her stomach drop. Oh, this can’t be going well, she thought. I have to get out of here. Her eyes scanned around for an escape. Louise gritted her teeth.
“No,” she said. “Please explain it to me!” Pelagie put the cig in her mouth.
“You’re just a slut,” she said. “Just like me!”
“Excuse me?” Lou hissed.
“You know what I said!” Pelagie said as she pressed her feet to the carpet.
“And who do I have to thank for that?!?” her daughter snapped. Noiz cleared her throat. Mother and daughter both turned to her.
“WHAT?!?” they snapped. *Sweat drop on Noiz’s head* She clenched her fists on her lap.
“I have to go to the bathroom,” she lied. “Bye!” The kitty leapt up from the table and raced down the hall before things could get ugly between mother and daughter. The shouting only made her run faster.
