Chapter Fifty: Road to Nowhere:
Wallace still doesn’t know what he is doing. Somehow, he was okay with that. The
country boy was going to go through the play just fine. Not like he had any
speaking roles anyway. He just stood in a line at the Pearly Gates to be judged.
That wasn’t really significant. Julia and that lead actor would be taking the
stage. (He already forgot his name.) And then what?
That’s where it just trails off. Wallace decided not to drop out of school. He
was going to finish this semester. From there, he didn’t know. It wasn’t a
complete bust here. Wallace did make some friends here. There were plenty of
other girls who liked them.
Wallace walked back into the building. Julia was still probably up there. Was
she ever going to leave tonight? Sure, she was pretty. That was all that he had
about her. It wasn’t like they were dating or anything. They had sex and that
was it. Even that wasn’t as good the more that they did it. Still, something
told him that she wasn’t going to let him go so easily.
The country boy stared up at the ceiling of the elevator. It all seems kind of
futile now that he thought about it. What was the point of this? Julia, of
course. But she proved not to be worth it. Which all came back to that nagging
question. What was he going to do now?
Wallace frowned to himself. He hated how he didn’t have an answer for that. He
sighed and rubbed his forehead. The country boy grew tired of asking himself
that question. Clearly, he wasn’t going to get the answer by asking himself that
over and over. The country boy was going to have to figure that one out for
himself. But first, he was going to have to get some sleep. Maybe then…
The country boy shook his head. He couldn’t think about that right now. All
Wallace wanted to do was go to sleep. Questions didn’t matter. The future didn’t
matter. Julia didn’t matter. All that matter was going to sleep.
He made it back to his apartment and unlocked the door. Sure enough, Julia was
still there. She was sitting on the couch. She was only dressed in her black
lacy panties. Julia managed to get her hands on a beer and was enjoying it when
he got back. Wallace had a dull look on his face as he closed the door behind
him.
“You’re still here?” he asked. “Why?” Julia just shrugged at him. The country
boy shook his head. Once upon a time, this would’ve excited him. Now, he just
didn’t care anymore.
“Whatever, I’m going to bed,” he said. “You can do whatever you want. Leave if
you are going to leave. Stay if you want. I’m just tired.”
“Okay,” she said so causally. Julia took another sip of her beer. Wallace shook
his head and walked down the hall. Right now, the country boy didn’t want to
think about anything anymore. He could hear his bed calling him. The country boy
opened the door and walked inside. He went right to sleep as soon as his head
hit the pillow.
