Chapter Forty-Seven: Trapped in Uncertainty:
Now, Wallace is stuck. He looked down at Julia sound asleep next to him. He
still saw her beauty, but there wasn’t that spark anymore. The country boy
started to wonder what the point to this was. He got the girl but something
wasn’t right.
“Do I really love you?” Wallace asked a sleeping Julia. This wasn’t the same
girl he had been crushing on for years. Another thought crossed his mind. Did he
even know her back then? They barely talked in junior high and high school. When
they did, she was half-listening while he talked. She had her friends while he
was alone. Even her friends weren’t fans of his. A couple of them were assholes
to him. That’s just how things were. Wallace never complained about it. He had
been used to it. Now…
Now, this wasn’t him. This wasn’t her. Or was it her and he never bothered to
ask.
Wallace closed his eyes and shook his head.
“Who are you?” he asked her. Julia moved in place. Her lips begged for a kiss.
Wallace started to lean in closer. Closer… Closer…
He froze.
No. This didn’t feel right. He couldn’t feel that spark anymore. He followed her
here to this school just to be with her. Wallace joined the drama club and
became an extra in a play. He did it all for her. But now it just didn’t seem
worth it anymore. Still, the play was going to be two weeks from now.
Wallace looked over at the clock next to him. It was 2:47 in the morning. It
didn’t feel like it. His gaze turned up at the ceiling. The boy couldn’t sleep
anymore. Julia was still sound asleep on top of him. Now what?
There was one thing that he had to do. It wasn’t right to start leading her on.
Wallace couldn’t see himself in a relationship with Julia anymore. The arts
weren’t really for him. This school wasn’t really doing anything for him. Maybe
his mom was right. Were these thoughts going to stay? Wallace wasn’t sure
anymore. He needed to talk to Julia. Well, okay yes. But he just needed to hear
someone else’s opinion. Still, the country boy knew that he would have to tell
Julia the truth.
Wallace paused as he looked down to see a pair of brown eyes looking up at him.
“Julia?” he asked. “What are you doing awake? Did I wake you up?” She shook her
head. The country boy was even more confused.
“How long have you been awake?” he asked. His supposed girl giggled.
“Quite some time now,” she said. Wallace’s face fell flat as he put the pieces
together. She’s done this before, hasn’t she? Julia noticed the look on his
face.
“Is something wrong?” she asked. Wallace pressed his lips together. He hadn’t
planned for this to come right now. The county boy’s eyes shifted away from her.
“I…” he said. Wallace sighed and dropped her shoulders.
“Actually, we need to talk,” he said.
