Eye in the Sky
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Muriel mumbled to herself as she wandered down to the front door. Who was here
this early? This didn’t make any sense. Who was crazy enough to up this early on
the first day of summer? Muriel rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.
“Who is it?” she asked.
“Good morning!” a sing-songy voice shouted on the
other side. Muriel froze with wide eyes. Don’t
tell me…
Against her better judgement, the old biddy opened the door. Aisha stood outside
with a smile on her face. Lewis and Clyde stood behind her, frowning. Muriel
threw back her head and groaned.
“What are you doing here?” she asked. Aisha looked her up and down and frowned.
“Why aren’t you dressed?” she asked.
“It’s too early,” Muriel complained.
“Nonsense!” Aisha said with her hands on her hips. “Early to rise makes woman
strong and bright!” Muriel frowned and closed the door. The leader caught it
before it could close.
“Hey!” the old biddy yelled.
“Get dressed right now,” Aisha said. “We’re heading out now.”
“Do I have to?” Muriel said. She looked to their friends for help. Lewis
shrugged and shook her head. Clyde shuffled her feet as she tried to look away.
“Yes!” the leader shouted. “Get moving now!” Muriel dropped her head and sighed.
“Fine,” she grumbled. The old biddy turned and walked back into her house. Aisha
followed her inside. Lewis and Clyde looked at each other as they walked into
the house.
---------
“Tucker!” Annie shouted in the living room. “Tucker! Come up here now!” She
spotted him sound asleep in his old brown recliner. His wife sighed and rolled
her eyes. Annie stomped over and slapped Tucker on the leg.
“Ow!” he shouted as
he woke up. Annie stood in front of him, frowning.
“What did you do that for?!” Tucker asked.
“Get up!” his wife yelled. “We have to clean the house!” He gave her a confused
look.
“Why?” he asked. Annie’s red turned red as she resisted the urge to scream.
“My sister is coming here today,” she said with her voice trembling. “I told you
last night, remember?” Tucker had a stupid look in his face.
“Huh?” he asked. Annie put her hands on head and groaned.
“Are you kidding me?!” she yelled. “Get up and help me around the house! Get up!
Get up! Get up!” She kept whacking her husband on the leg to get him up. Tucker
threw his hands up in the air as he groaned.
“Fine!” he shouted. “I’m up! I’m up!” Tucker ran to the diner part of their
house. Annie followed behind, scowling and hitting him on the arms the whole
time.
------------
Muriel stood over the kettle in her kitchen. All of her friends sat at the
table, waiting. This wasn’t how she wanted to spend her morning. Aisha wasn’t
one to back down from “doing good” for the community. Muriel didn’t feel like
dealing with her today. She needed a plan. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Her head
jerked upward.
“I’ve got it!” Muriel shouted. She ran all the way to the front door.
“Who is it?” the old biddy asked. William stood outside with his hands in his
pockets.
