Moonlight Feels Right
Liz is going to college this fall. She walked up to Muriels front door and knocked on the wood. The young girl backed up with it creaked open.
Yes? Muriel asked. Liz broke into a huge smile.
Ms. Fairbanks, so nice to see you, she said. How are you today? The old biddy raised an eyebrow at her.
What do you want? she asked.
Nothing, Liz answered. Im going away to university soon.
You are? Muriel asked.
Yep, the girl said. Im going to the big city.
Oh, her neighbor said, nodding. Liz grinned at her.
Can you take me out on the town? she asked. Muriel gave her a strange look.
Why? she asked. The younger girl gave her an angelic little smile.
Please? she asked.
Why? Muriel asked again.
I just want to see the town before I go off to university, Liz told her. The old biddys face turned to a bright one.
Oh, she said. Sure, love.
Thank you, Liz said.
-------
Liz and the old biddies headed downtown. Aisha looked over at Muriel.
So why are we here? she whispered.
Shes going to university soon, Muriel answered.
Oh, the leader answered.
Shes going to university? Lewis asked.
Thats what she says, their friend answered. Liz looked at them, frowning.
Why dont you all believe that Im going to university? she asked. The biddies drew their mouths closed at her question.
Sorry, Lewis spoke up. Its just a surprise to us. The younger girl frowned at them.
Oh no, weve upset er, Clyde said. Aisha nudged her in the back.
We are so sorry, the leader told her. Lizs frown didnt go away.
Is there any way we can make it up to you? Aisha tried again. Liz began to smile.
Well she said.
--------
The four old biddies looked odd in the middle of a trendy clothing store. Liz went around picking cute clothes that she adored, but never could get around to buying. The other three old ladies glared at their leader.
What? Aisha asked, shrugging. This was what she wanted. Her friends still frowned at her. Liz rushed over to them with two dresses in her hand. One was yellow and white while the other was a deep purple.
Which one? This one or this one? she asked, holding them up. The old biddies looked at them.
Purple, they all said. Liz looked at the dress in her right hand and nodded.
Good enough, she said. The young girl turned and walked up to the cashier. The old biddies sighed.
It never ends! Lewis complained under her breath.
Just bear with it, Aisha whispered back.
Shut up, the farmer hissed.
--------
The five of them arrived at the Sunny Plum. Liz turned to her older friends with a smile on her face.
Whos paying for my lunch? she asked. The old biddies pointed to each other. The younger girl shrugged her shoulders.
Well figure something out later, she said. Liz walked inside, holding her new clothes. The old biddies looked amongst each other.
Cant we stop er? Clyde asked. Muriel shook her head.
Nope, she answered. Her friends groaned as they followed the hyper girl inside. Liz walked up to the front counter.
Hello, Tucker! she cheered. Whats your special for today? The owner raised an eyebrow at her.
Whats the occasion? he asked. You never ask for the special. No burgers or chips? Liz shook her head.
Nope, she said. Im going away to university. Tucker gave her a blank stare.
You are? he asked.
Yes, Liz answered, nodding. Shocked, the man raced back to the kitchen.
Annie! Youve got to hear this! he shouted. The man and his wife returned to the front counter. She frowned at what could possibly be unfolding before her.
What is it? Annie grumbled. Tucker turned back to a slightly annoyed Liz.
Tell her your good news, he said. Liz rolled her eyes.
Im going to university, she said. Annies jaw dropped as she fainted. The young woman folded her arms across her chest.
Why doesnt anyone believe that Im going to university?! she asked.
Well Muriel replied sheepishly behind her. Liz sighed and lowered her head.
I hate you all, she muttered under her breath.
