Chapter Five: Milo Cash:
I met an angel-faced boy today. His name was Milo Cash. I could never forget him if I tried. He was a tiny little thing. The best way to describe Milo was skinny and short. When I first saw him, I thought he was in kindergarten. We met on the playground. Everyone in my class was still talking about the invasion. They all wanted to know who this enemy was. Some of the kids were really scared. Others were angry. I personally didn’t care at the time. Kat taught Lyle and I not to form opinions until we had the facts. I didn’t know anything about the enemy just yet. So, I kept my mouth shut and went on with my little life.
My classmates asked me how I could be so calm at a time like this. I just shrugged at them.
“I don’t know,” I replied. “We don’t really know the details. So how can we be scared of what we don’t know?” They all looked at me like I had lost my little mind. Then, they all turned back to their worried conversation. I shook my head at them.
“Whatever,” I mumbled to no one in particular. I walked away to find my brother. That’s when I saw that young angel. He stood near the fence looking out at the street. I could only see his back. His hair was black and choppy. His clothes look so messy. I didn’t think I had even seen him here at school before. I blinked to see if I was seeing things. No, this kid was real. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. How long had he been in this school? Who was he? Was he new? I decided to go and find out. I walked over to this kid staring at the road. I came up next to him.
“See anything interesting?” I asked.
“It’s always the same,” he said. “Day after day after day after day after day.” I found myself surprised my his accent.
“You’re American?” I asked. He turned around to face me. I froze up in surprise. “I didn’t know that eyes could be that blue!” I thought in amazement. His face looked so pale too. Almost a powder white. I wanted to blow in his face to see if any of the powder would come off of his face. His cheeks were the only thing that looked fat on him. This boy blinked at me once.
“Yes,” he said. “Wisconsin.”
“Wisconsin? I’ve never heard of that!”
“Really?” I nodded.
“Yeah.” He looked at me surprised.
“It’s in the middle north of America.” I nodded at him, pretending to get it.
“Ah.” We stayed quiet for a long moment. “What’s your name?”
“Milo. Milo Cash. What’s your name?”
“Claudia Gains.”
“Cl-au-di-a. You’re English, aren’t you?” I nodded at him proudly.
“Why yes I am!” Milo looked at me oddly.
“What’s a Brit doing here?”
“Huh?”
“In Germany, I mean.” I shrugged a little bit.
“I live here with my brother and Kat.” Milo looked at me puzzled.
“Kat?”
“She’s my mom.”
“Why do you call her Kat?” I shrugged at him.
“Dunno, Lyle’s done it since he could talk.”
“Lyle?”
“He’s my older brother.”
“Ah.”
“Why are you here, in Germany, I mean?” Milo shrugged at me.
“Dunno, I was taken from Wisconsin and brought here.”
“To who?”
“Some lady. I don’t even know how to say her name.” I looked at him as if he was crazy. This was an odd duck, alright. But yet, something about him made me want to learn all about him as much as I could.
“So why are you staring at the road?” Milo turned back to the fence.
“It always looks the same.”
“Yes, I get that. So why stare at it day after day?”
“I don’t like change.” I paused and slowly took it all in. I nodded and pretended to understand him.
“Uh-huh, yeah. I get that.” Then, Milo turned around to me once again.
“I like you!” I looked at him in big surprise.
“What?!?” He quickly grabbed me by the hands.
“Marry me!”
“Whoa! Slow down there! We just met!” Milo raised an eyebrow at me.
“Don’t you like me?”
“Well, yeah, but… let’s slow down first, okay?” Milo blinked once at me.
“Slow down?” I nodded at him.
“Yes.” Milo just stared at me blankly. Then, the bell rang. Milo let go of my hands and walked away. I just stood there staring at him. He’s crazy, but I think I like that little dummy!
