Something is Not Right
It was Natalia
who first noticed it. She turned around head jerked up.
“You sense it
too?” Izumi asked.
“Yes,” Natalia
said.
“Which one?” Liz
asked. The other two angels looked at each other.
“What?!” they
asked. Liz pointed at the front door.
“I heard two
people outside,” she said. That caught Himeko and Yoshiko’s attention. The
latter gave her a strange look.
“Are you
serious?” she asked. She pulled out her phone.
“There’s still
no signal,” the angel said. The other angels looked at their phones as well.
“She’s right,”
Himeko said. She looked up at Liz.
“How is this
even possible?” she asked. The other angel shrugged.
“Fuck if I
know,” she said. Suddenly, they heard the door open. The angels turned to see a
girl’s head poking around inside.
“Hello?” she
asked. “Is anybody in here? Hello? Hello?” At first, the angels looked confused.
Izumi took a step forward.
“No, don’t!” the
others whispered.
“Hello?” Izumi
said back. The girl took a slower step inside, looking around.
“Nancy don’t!” a
boy whispered behind her.
“It’s fine,”
Nancy said. “There’s no one in here.” Izumi looked confused.
“We’re here!”
she shouted back. A hand reached out and grabbed Nancy on the arm. She gently
tugged away from him. The angels looked just as confused.
“Do they not
hear us?” Natalia asked, blinking.
“Apparently
not…” Izumi said, waiting at the couple at the door. Liz made weird face.
“But how?” she
asked. None of the angels had an answer for this. That’s when Izumi remembered
something else from earlier.
“Hey, Natalia
didn’t you sense something else wrong a moment ago?” she asked. All eyes fell on
the lead angel. It took a moment for it to register in her brain.
“Ah!” she said,
hitting her fist in her open palm. “I can’t sense Masayuki anymore.” There was a
long pause.
“How long ago
was that?” Himeko asked. Natalia counted up in her head.
“I’m not sure.
About… twenty minutes. Maybe?” she said. A heavy silence filled the room.
“How did we lose
the kid?” Liz asked.
“I don’t know,”
Izumi said. “But I think I might have a clue.” She turned her attention to the
hallway. Baby Doll still lay unconscious on the floor.
Meanwhile, Nancy had walked into the seemingly empty apartment. Her boyfriend and the baby had no choice but to follow her inside. The angels would have to worry with them later. They had a bigger problem to deal with on the other side.
