Chapter
Twenty-Nine: All in One Room:
The nurse sat
Lauren down in a chair. She slipped a tube into the vampire’s mouth. She slapped
her on the cheeks a couple of times.
“Come on,” she
said. “Stay with me. I will get you back to good.” The vampire looked at her
with dazed, half-shut eyes. The nurse waved her hand in front of her hand.
Lauren gave off a low groan.
“Oh, good,” the
nurse said. “Stay with me.” She walked over to the supply fridge and pulled the
key out of her pocket. The lid flipped up with a pop. Several packs of blood
waited inside. The nurse did a quick count.
“Hope you don’t
have a certain type you like,” she said. “You are just getting blood in your
mouth. So, I don’t want to hear you complain.” The nurse picked up armfuls of
packets. She opened one and put it to Lauren’s mouth.
“Drink up,” she
said. The blood started to go into the vampire’s mouth. But then, the nurse
froze.
“Hello?” she
asked. Against her better judgement, the nurse turned around. Two pale men
dressed in black heavy coats stood on the other side of the room. One had a
sword strapped to his back. Their eyes stayed locked on the nurse behind their
shades. Their potential victim tilted her head.
“Can I help
you?” she asked.
“Move!” the man
without the sword said. The nurse raised her eyebrow.
“Why?” she
asked.
“Don’t make me
say it again,” the man said. The other man drew out his sword. The nurse put her
hands on her hips.
“Please leave!”
she said. “I am tending to a patient here.” One man disappeared. The nurse
turned around. The man appeared with a knife to Lauren’s throat.
“Stop right
there!” the nurse yelled. She reached out to grab him, but her whole body froze.
The other man appeared behind her. Another blade was held to her neck.
“I told you,
don’t interfere,” the man said. She noticed the glint of his fangs.
“What do you
want with her?” the nurse asked.
“Don’t
interfere,” her captor repeated. “Don’t make me tell you again!” The nurse’s
eyes went to Lauren drinking the blood in the chair. The other vampire held his
sword above his head.
“Goodbye, you
abomination,” he said in a low voice. Lauren’s eyes rolled towards him.
“Hold it!” a
woman’s voice yelled. The standing being turned towards the door. Eric and Linda
stood in the doorway. The vampire standing over Lauren.
“More pests,”
his partner said. Linda ran over to Lauren.
“Stay back!” the
hunter over the female vampire shouted. He held out his hand and whipped her
back.
“Linda!” her
husband yelled. Linda sat up, rubbing the back of her head.
“Ow,” she
mumbled.
“Are you okay?”
Eric asked. His wife looked up at him.
“Yes,” she said.
Then, she turned back to Lauren. “They are about to kill our baby.”
“Huh?” her
husband asked. The lady scientist ran over to her test subject.
“Stay back!” the
hunter yelled. He held out his hand again. That wasn’t going to stop Linda. She
already made up her mind. The scientist gritted her teeth.
“You will not
keep me away from my daughter!” she yelled after she was thrown to the ground to
the fourth time. The hunter gave her a strange look.
“What?” he
asked. Linda ran straight over to Lauren. She looked at her test subject slumped
against the chair. The scientist gently shook her.
“Hello?” she
asked. “Can you hear me? Hello?” Lauren head leaned to the side, leaving blood
dripping to the floor. Linda looked up at the hunter, her husband, and the nurse
in the room.
“What’s wrong
with her?” she asked.
“She needs to be
fed more blood,” the nurse said. “Otherwise she won’t survive.”
“Silence!” the
hunter behind her snapped. The tip of the blade touched her skin.
“Right…” Linda
said. She started picked up blood packs and opening them. The hunter behind her
blinked.
“Hold on,” he
said. “So… you are the one who created this abomination?”
“She’s not an
abomination,” Linda said. “She is my test subject who’s like a daughter to me.”
Eric sighed and rubbed his forehead.
“This again?” he
muttered to himself.
“What was that?”
his wife asked. Eric clenched his teeth.
“Nothing, dear!”
he said. The hunter lowered his sword.
“And why would
you do this?” he asked. Lina placed a second blood pack into Lauren’s mouth.
“I wanted to see
what would happen,” she said.
“What?” the
hunter asked. Linda turned to him with a smile on his face.
“I have loved
vampires for a long time,” she said. “I have always wanted what would happen if
we made one immune to sunlight.”
“That’s why my
wife created the drug, Sun Disease,” Eric added.
“Exactly,” his
wife said. The hunter’s sword hit the ground.
“You mean to
tell me the only reason this creature existence because you wanted to see what
would happen?!” he asked.
“Yes,” Linda
said with a nod.
“That’s got to
be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!” the hunter yelled. His partner still had
his stoic face.
“Someone else is
coming,” he said. His partner whipped around.
“What is it
now?!” he asked. The hunters, nurse, Eric, and Linda looked up when they heard
footsteps. Fred stood in the doorway inches away from the male scientist. The
shop owner blanked.
“Uh… What’s going on here?” he asked, looking back and forth. He took a slow step backwards.
