Chapter Fifteen: Organization:

What is all of this? Nancy started taking control of everything. I don’t know how this happened. She just stood up and opened her mouth.

“We need a plan,” she said. I turned my head.

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“This was fine when you were on your own with the dog,” she said. “I might not intend on staying with you but this will have to do for now.” I narrowed my eyes at her. I didn’t like where this was going.

“First, we need to deal with food,” Nancy said. “We still have enough from the store up the road. But what happens when food runs out there? Are there any houses that are locked up here?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

“Exactly,” she said.

“What are you getting at?” I asked.

“We need a plan of survival,” Nancy said, flaring her arms around. “What will we do if we get driven out?”

“I doubt it,” I mumbled.

“But it could,” she said. “You’ve got to be prepared for everything.” I frowned as I rolled my eyes. She wasn’t going to listen to anything I had to say. I might as well let her get it out of her system.

“And how do you purpose we do that?” I asked.

“I’m still working on that,” Nancy said. “I will have to make a list for everything in case things change. It’s a good thing that we won’t have other people staying with us.”  She looked down at her belly.

“Well, almost,” she said. That was another thing I didn’t get. Why do women get pregnant in a post-apocalyptic world? Well, this isn’t exactly the apocalypse, but still… It just seemed like a hassle to me. I didn’t bother to ask Nancy in her situation. That’s her business. I am worried about how she’s going to handle this. I’m not a doctor. We’re the only people in the neighborhood. I don’t know if the internet is working in this place either.

“Do you know about giving birth?” I asked. “Like the medical stuff?” Nancy gave me a sour look.

“Obviously, I don’t,” she said. Well, fuck. Looks like it was going to get messy. Maybe she might have to lead things after all.

“How along are you?” I asked.

“Two more months,” Nancy said. I nodded before I looked down at my plate. Oh. I’m done with my food.

“Can I go now?” I asked.

“Yes, you may,” she said.

“Cheers,” I said. I got up from the table and hurried back to my room. I just couldn’t take hearing her planning out loud. Although…
