Chapter Thirty-Four: What Do I Really Want?:

Wallace stared up at the ceiling. Tonight revealed many things that he never knew about himself. When did Julia change like this? The country boy shook his head to himself. It didn’t make sense to him.

He started to wonder why he came here. The country boy wanted to follow his crush out here, of course. Now, he wasn’t so sure anymore. How well did he really know her? They didn’t really talk much when they were in high school. He was always alone while she had her friends. Sure, she would talk to him. But that was about it, really.

Julia cuddled up close to him in her sleep. Wallace glanced down at her. She looked so innocent in her sleep. He reached over and pushed some of her bangs from her eyes. Another thought washed into his mind. Why was she so interested in him tonight? Julia could have any guy that she wanted. But she chose me. It didn’t make any sense. Did she really feel anything for him? His stomach turned as he thought of the other option. Wallace closed his eyes and shook his head.

No. She couldn’t be like that. Could she? That wasn’t her. At least… that’s what he thought she was. Wallace rubbed his head. None of this was clicking together. He looked over at his clock. Two in the morning? It didn’t feel like it. Let’s see, what was tomorrow. Saturday, was it? He didn’t have any classes then. Oh, but there was rehearsal. That was going to be awkward. How was that going to work out? Good thing that he was an extra.

That led to another question.

Were they dating now? It didn’t feel like it. They just went out to student bar and had sex. This didn’t feel like it was a date. They should’ve done something more romantic like a dinner and a movie. He didn’t get the chance to ask her out. Maybe he could do it next time.

Wallace frowned to himself.

Was there ever going to be a next time? Was he just going to be another notch on her bed post? The country boy drew his eyes closed. He’s thinking too much again. I need to sleep. Wallace tried, but it wasn’t happening. The country boy just laid there in his bed with so many unanswered questions.

The next morning, Julia ran her finger in circles on his chest.

“Good morning,” she said. Wallace looked over her.

“Hey, Julia,” he said.

“Hm?” she asked.

“What are we now?” Wallace asked. “Are we… dating now?” Julia broke into a smile on her face.

“Do you want us to be?” she asked. Wallace smiled as he shook her head.

“I don’t know,” he said. He had no idea what he was doing in general. Julia looked like an angel with a smile on her face.
