Chapter Six:
Something is Coming This Way:
The snow brings the
drama. There is about to be a war coming—again. Some are staying out of it.
Others are running right toward the action.
There is one who
doesn’t want anything to do with it.
Ann stared at
herself in the mirror in the dark. She looked like she needed some sleep. She
hated it when it snowed. Too many painful memories. Her husband and son stayed
away from her when she was like this. They already knew how to help her.
Chris and Stan stood
outside in the hallway. The men looked at each other.
“What do we do this
time?” Stan mouthed. His father took a moment to think. He reached to knock on
the door but stopped. The boy held his breath. Chris lowered his hand.
“Give her a moment,”
he said in a low voice. Stan didn’t have to ask twice. He turned and walked back
to his room. Chris sat down on the floor.
Ann hadn’t moved
from her spot in front of the mirror. What is going on in her head? Her family
had a guess.
“I’m going to get
you something to drink, okay?” Chris whispered to her. His wife didn’t answer.
The cop timed himself before he got up and walked down to the kitchen. Ann heard
him but didn’t respond.
How long does she
stay like this? It varies. This time, it looked like everyone was going to be in
for the long haul. I think we’re going to leave Ann alone for a while.
Ooo! What’s going on over there?
