Chapter Six: The
Perks of Growing Up:
Now that I
depressed you enough, let’s talk about the good shit. There are some perks to
growing up. First, there is more freedom. You can go out when you please. You
may have to ask for permission, but you can go alone. You can’t drive yet, but
you can still try to get your license. What else is there?
You will start
to get your own money. You have might had money when you were a little kid, but
your parents bought most of everything for you. Now, your parents are cutting
you off from everything fun. If you do not need it to survive, you are getting
it yourself. Sorry, that’s how the world works. Sucks, I know. But it’s not all
that bad. You get your own money. Nothing feels so good.
More options are
opened up to you. When you were a kid, everything was decided for you. You get
no say in the matter you. You won’t notice it until turn thirteen. By then, you
get to make more decisions for yourself. Granted, your parents will have the
final say in the end. But, you still get choices. Oh and you will soon get your
own place too. How cool is that?
You will get
some respect too. Adults stop talking down to you like a little kid. They are
starting to count on you. They are starting to trust you. Don’t blow it! It will
give you more power that way. The older you get the more power and respect will
fall into your lap.
Even your toys
get cooler. Instead of dolls, Barbies, action figures, and toy cars, you will
get game systems, cars, phones, computers, and Apple products. It will take you
time to acquire these things. But, they will all be yours. It will be so worth
it.
Another perk is
all of the attention that falls into your lap. Not the “oh that kid is so cute”
attention. But the, “oh damn you fine” attention. This one sits on a thin line.
It’s a blessing and curse. It can be good, but it can also be a pain in the ass.
Use it wisely. It might come in handy sometime.
We’ve covered the good and the bad. But, we still aren’t finished. Are you paying attention? I am about to drum some more wisdom in your head.
