Spider Webs
October first put the Gabriels through Hell. It all started with phone calls. At the beginning of every semester, David gave the students his home phone number as a way to contact him. Miho naturally saw this as an opportunity to further her quest. This didn’t happen right away, mind you. At first, Miho was afraid to make the call. She held her phone in her hands many an evening. It’s so simple, right?, she thought to herself. All she had to do was dial him up and make the call. But, why couldn’t she do it? How could she do it? What would she talk to him about? School? But what exactly about it?
Finally, Miho just bit the bullet in September. She drew in a deep breath.
I’ll just do it!, she thought. The freshman hesitated with the numbers at first. At six o’clock she made the call.
“Hello?” David asked. Miho nearly jumped at the sound of his voice.
“Gabriel-sensei!” she shirked.
“Miho?” he asked. “Miho, what’s wrong?”
“Uh…” she mumbled. The freshman tightly shut her eyes. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?” he asked.
“I shouldn’t have called,” Miho said.
“It’s okay,” David told her.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. Then, she hung up the phone. The freshman sat back against the wall and sighed. That’s not how I wanted it to go, she thought. The hope began to deflate like a loosened balloon. She didn’t have it in her to face him in class the next morning. In fact, she thought about skipping or even dropping it altogether. But, Miho reluctantly went just to keep her grades perfect. Noticing her discomfort, David decided to fix the problem.
“Miho,” he said as she was rushing out of the classroom. “Can I talk to you for moment?” The freshman froze at the doorway.
“Yes,” she said as she lowered her head. The girl returned to his desk as she stared at the ground. David gave her a sympathetic smile.
“About last night’s call,” he said.
“I wasn’t thinking,” Miho cut in. “I’m really sorry and it won’t happen again.” He gently shook his head. He lifted her head for her to look at him. Miho blushed at the sight of his bright blue eyes.
“Miho,” David said. “It’s okay. You can talk to me about anything at any time.” She looked at him with big, lost eyes.
“I can?” she asked.
“Of course!” the professor said. “That why I gave out my number to my students.” Miho felt her walls crashing down after he said that. Shortly after that, Miho relaxed and started calling David every week. At first, it was just typical stuff like school and how the week was. David didn’t mind; he thought he was reaching out to a student. Miho soon began to call every night. Ashley became uncomfortable about this.
“I trust you, Dave,” she said. “But please be careful. I just don’t want you to send her the wrong idea.”
“It’s okay, baby,” he said. “Miho perfectly understands that professional relationship between us. It’ll be fine.” Ashley trembled a bit.
“I just wish she didn’t have to call all the time,” she whispered.
“I’ll talk to her,” David told her. He did as he said he would and things seemed to cool down. But then in October, things took a frightening turn.
At ten o’clock in the evening, Ashley started to get verbal attacks over the phone from Miho. The professor’s wife had just finished washing dishes when the phone rang. Ashley smiled to herself, thinking it was her husband.
“Hello?” she asked.
“Is Gabriel-sensei in?” a groggy voice asked on the other line.
“No,” Ashley said. “Why?” Then, the person on the other line hung up. Ashley blinked as she looked at the phone.
That was strange, she thought. This went on for five nights in a row. It didn’t take Ashley to get annoyed pretty quickly.
“Look!” she snapped. “I don’t know who are, but stop calling my house!” The calls didn’t stop from there. Miho soon became threatening with her calls.
“Please let me talk to Gabriel-sensei.”
“Please. I need to talk to him.”
“I have to talk to Gabriel-sensei.”
“I have to talk to Gabriel-sensei. It’s really important.”
“You’re hiding him from me, aren’t you? Aren’t you?!?”
“Stop trying to hide Gabriel-sensei from me, bitch!”
“Look, bitch! I don’t know what game you’re playing at! But, tell me where Gabriel-sensei is!”
“Where the hell is David?!?”
“Tell me where David is!”
“Where the fuck is David?!?”
“If you don’t give me David, I will come over there and fuck you up!”
“I WILL KILL YOU IF YOU DON’T PUT DAVID ON THE PHONE, BITCH!!!”
“ROLL OVER AND DIE!”
Lucky that Ashley recorded the repeated phoned threats for the police to hear as she and her husband filed the report to the police. The cops played them back for the murder investigation.
