Chapter Fifteen: Why did Japan Side with Germany?:

At three a.m., I was reminded why I find Sappoto-san annoying at times. I awoke to someone poking me in the back. I tried to ignore it at first, but the poking kept on persisting. I tightly shut my eyes.

What?!? I murmured.

Miho-chan, Sappoto-san whispered in the dark. I cant sleep.

So? I asked.

Talk to me.

No!

Please?

I sighed aloud. Anything to shut her up. Fine, what do you want to talk about?

Why did Japan side with Germany? she asked without missing a beat. I lifted my head and looked at her.

What?!? I asked.

Why did Japan side with Germany? she asked again.

I dont know! I said.

Why not?

I want to sleep!

But why?

To what?

Why did Japan side with Germany?

I dont know. We wanted more power or something. Can I go back to sleep now? There came a pause. I assumed that it was over from there. I assumed wrong!

Miho-chan.

What?

We lost.

I know that.

Why didnt we side with the Americans?

Probably because we didnt like them at the time.

But why?

Because Germany didnt like them.

Why?

I gritted my teeth. How should I know? I wasnt alive at the time.

Why did the Americans have to drop bombs on us?

Maybe they were pissed because we bombed them first. There came another pause. Maybe this time I would sleep? No!

Thats kind of dumb, she said. The grinded my teeth together as I clutched my pillow.

Yes! I said. It is. Now can I please go back to sleep? You are being a pest. Just shut up and go to sleep, okay? This time, she didnt talk at all. I breathed out a little bit.

Okay, I said. Good night. I shut my eyes and tried to go back to sleep. No thanks to her, I couldnt exactly do that. So, I just lied there and pretended to be asleep.

I swear, Sappoto-san can be just as annoying as Andi when she cant sleep at nights.
