Chapter XXXV:
I ended up in
South Carolina. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I was there and now what?
Find another job? I will need money to survive. My stomach started to growl. I
really am going to need something to eat too.
I wandered into
town. I must have come it at the early hours of the morning because there was no
one around. Chills ran down my spine when no one was in sight. It felt like it
was the end of the world. She wasn’t laughing. Luna wasn’t even behind me. I’m
not sure if that makes it any better. She could be hiding in secret, plotting to
make my life miserable. I clinched my teeth. She’s the reason that my wife is
dead. She’s the reason I killed that priest. This is all her fault!
I sank down to
my knees. I’m too tired. Death could take me and it would make no difference. No
one would even know who I was. I fell to the ground. They would probably assume
that I was a drunk and walk past me. Maybe they’d bury me in an unmarked grave.
Fingertips
struck my hair.
“I won’t let
that happen.”
I laughed dryly
to myself. There she was. If I could, I would’ve choked her out. Is this what’s
become of me now? I just wanted to cry. Or laugh. Maybe both.
Suddenly,
something poked me in the side.
“Sir? Are you
awake? Sir? Sir?”
I looked up to
see a broom handle hitting me on the side. An old lady stared down at me.
“Are you alright?” she asked. I kind of chuckled. She gave me a strange look. I didn’t have much to say. I ended up drawing my eyes closed. Ah, sweet sleep take me away. Take me far away. I can’t take this anymore. I just want it all to end. Sweet sleep take away, take me far, far away.
